The EV and hybrid automotive market is accelerating the transition to renewable energy sources.
Local recycling of used EV batteries will optimize the supply chain for production lines with raw materials in a circular way.
UK lithium-ion battery recycling
Currently the UK lacks industrial capacity for lithium-ion battery recycling and therefore batteries are shipped to mainland Europe for material recovery. The latter is very expensive and can be dependent on the state of the battery end of life, it sizes and chemistry.
Second largest vehicle market
The UK is the second largest vehicle market in Europe with annual sales exceeding 2.3 million. It is amongst the top electric vehicle markets in Europe with 32,000 EV’s registered in the first quarter of 2020.
203,000 tonnes per year to recycle
On current projections the average lifespan of lithium-ion batteries is 11 years, and therefore the volume of batteries coming to “end of life” is projected to be 1.4 million packs per year by 2040. The latter translates to 339,000 tonnes of batteries per year based on an average weight of 238 kg and assuming 60% are recycled; 203,000 tonnes per year will require recycling.
The shredding plant
Ensure that we create no additional waste, create a circular economy around the strategical metals and protect our environment in our quest for carbon neutral economies.
Hydrometallurgical capabilities
Recover the cathode materials and metal salts to go back into the supply chain. The recycling efficiency will be 85% and include an electrolyte recovery step.
The aim
is to ensure that we create no additional waste, create a circular economy around the strategical metals and protect our environment in our quest for carbon neutral economies.
The primarily focus
of the plant would be electric vehicle batteries, however, would also provide for mobile phone and other batteries.
We desperately need more industry on the Island to replace those lost jobs, and with the rapidly growing move towards electric vehicles, in order to achieve Net Zero targets, an EV battery recycling plant will become increasingly important
